The slash menu

Type / anywhere in your template and a menu appears right at your cursor – every style, block, and SmartTag, without reaching for the toolbar.

What the slash menu is

The slash menu is the fastest way to build a template. Instead of moving your hands off the keyboard, you type / where you're writing and pick what you need. It works at the start of a line, mid-sentence, even mid-word.

Type / and browse: styles, lists, blocks to insert, and every SmartTag in your template.

With just the / typed, the menu shows everything, grouped:

  • Styles — Title, Heading 1–3, Paragraph, Small text.

  • Lists — Bullet list and Numbered list.

  • Insert — Internal note, Single option section, Multiple options section, Page break, Table.

  • Smart tags — every SmartTag available in the template, shown as its colored tag.

Pick a command

Move through the menu with ↑ ↓ and press Enter — or simply click an option. The /whatever-you-typed is removed from your text and the choice is applied exactly where you were writing: styles restyle the current line, and inserted blocks or tags land at your cursor.

Changed your mind? Press Esc or click anywhere else. The menu closes and whatever you typed stays in the document, untouched.

Search as you type

Keep typing after the / to filter. The groups collapse into a single result list, ranked by best match — and matching is forgiving, so a few letters are enough. Spaces are fine too: /signer name works.

Typing /sig mid-sentence: press Enter and the Signer name tag drops right into the sentence.

For SmartTags, the search looks at the tag's name and its category — so /sig finds everything in the Signer category even before you spell out a tag's full name.

SmartTags without leaving the keyboard

This is where the slash menu saves the most time. While writing a clause, type / plus the first letters of the tag and press Enter — the tag drops in and you keep writing.

  • Inline tags — like names, numbers, dates, times, checkboxes, and dropdowns — sit inside the sentence, right where you typed the slash.

  • Larger tags — long answers, multiple choice, and image fields — are placed as their own block.

Tip

Try drafting a whole clause without touching the mouse: write the sentence, /sig Enter, keep writing, /date Enter — done.

When you just want to type a slash

The menu never gets in the way of ordinary writing:

  • It only opens when you type / — never when text is pasted or when someone else edits the shared template.

  • Your text is never changed by the menu closing. Type and/or or 24/7 and the characters stay exactly as written.

  • If what you type after the slash doesn't match anything, the menu quietly closes on its own and lets you write.

  • Esc closes it instantly, and it won't pop back up until you've moved on.

Why an option is sometimes missing

The menu only offers what can actually be used at your cursor. Inside a bullet or numbered list you won't be offered headings or tables; inside a table cell, some blocks aren't available either. Move the cursor to a regular line and the full menu returns.

Frequently asked questions

Which SmartTags appear in the menu?

All tags available to this template — the same set you'll find in the toolbar's SmartTag menu. The slash menu is just the faster way to reach them.

Is the slash menu different from the toolbar?

No — every option in the menu does exactly what its toolbar counterpart does. Use whichever is closer to hand; the slash menu simply keeps you in the flow of writing.

The menu opened, but I wanted a literal “/”

Just keep typing — your slash is already in the text, and the menu steps aside as soon as your words stop matching a command. Or press Esc to dismiss it immediately.
