How to add a consent and privacy notice to your contracts

This article explains how to add a consent and privacy notice to your contract templates in Connie. Including one ensures transparency and confirms that electronic signatures are legally valid.

Disclaimer: Connie is not a law firm, and this information is provided for general guidance only. It does not constitute legal advice. You should consult with a qualified legal professional to ensure your contracts meet your specific legal and regulatory requirements.

Adding a Consent and Privacy notice to your contracts ensures transparency, strengthens compliance, and confirms that electronic signatures are legally valid.

Connie always displays the following statement directly below the signature area: "I consent to electronically sign this document, and I understand that my signature is legally binding in accordance with applicable electronic signature laws."

We recommend also adding a consent and privacy clause to the bottom of every contract template you use. Three options are provided below – pick the one that fits your needs, or write your own.

Choose a clause

Add your chosen clause to the bottom of every contract template you use in Connie. Make sure your privacy policy is always accessible by linking directly to it.

Option 1 – Short and Lightweight

Suitable for simple agreements or email-style contracts.

By signing electronically, you consent to the use of eSignatures. We use the European eSignature tool Connie to securely process and store this document – all data stays in Europe. See our Privacy Policy: [PRIVACY_POLICY].

Option 2 – Plain and User-Friendly

Suitable for small businesses and customer-facing contracts.

Data Protection and eSignature

All personal data processed in connection with this agreement is hosted in Europe. For more details, please see our Privacy Policy here: [PRIVACY_POLICY].

Option 3 – Formal and Legal

Suitable for enterprise contracts or legal documents that require a more formal tone.

Electronic Signatures and Data Protection
The parties agree that this agreement may be executed and signed electronically, and such electronic signatures shall have the same legal effect as handwritten signatures. [COMPANY_NAME] uses the European eSignature tool Connie to facilitate the execution, secure storage, and management of this agreement. All personal data processed in connection with the execution of this agreement is hosted within the European Union and handled in compliance with applicable data protection laws. For further information on our data practices, please refer to our Privacy Policy: [PRIVACY_POLICY].

How to use these clauses

Pick the version that fits your style and audience. Add it to the bottom of every contract template you use in Connie. Make sure your Privacy Policy is always accessible by linking directly to it.

💡 Pro tip: Depending on the contract at hand and your jurisdiction, you may want to add a required checkbox for collecting explicit consent to sign electronically. This helps ensure compliance and makes consent crystal clear.

Insert Your Privacy Policy Using SmartTags

Instead of pasting your privacy policy URL by hand each time, use the Privacy Policy URL SmartTag. It always links to the correct page and updates automatically if the URL changes.

To insert it, type [PRIVACY_POLICY] anywhere in your document, or search for it in the SmartTag selector. Before using this SmartTag, make sure your privacy policy URL is saved under Settings – then Company.
